rolo — Terms of Service
Draft date: 2026-07-11 · Effective date: [EFFECTIVE DATE]
These Terms are an agreement between you (the parent or legal guardian who holds the account) and [COMPANY LEGAL NAME] ("rolo", "we", "us"), a company registered in England & Wales, company number [COMPANY NUMBER], registered address [REGISTERED ADDRESS].
Please read them alongside our Privacy Policy and our Safeguarding & Children notice, which form part of your agreement with us.
By creating an account you agree to these Terms.
1. Who can use rolo (eligibility)
- You must be 18 or over.
- You must be the parent or legal guardian of the child you set up rolo for, or otherwise have parental responsibility for them.
- You must be able to give consent on the child's behalf for the processing described in our Privacy Policy.
Adult verification is currently limited. At present rolo trusts the relationship you state at signup and does not independently verify it. This is a known gap that we intend to improve. By signing up you confirm that what you tell us about your identity and your relationship to the child is true. [LEGAL REVIEW NEEDED: decide the required standard of age assurance / relationship verification and update this clause.]
2. Your account and security
- The account is held by you, the adult. The child never has a login or password.
- You pair a device to one specific child by scanning a QR code from your signed-in session. Only one child can be paired to a device.
- Keep your password and your devices secure. You are responsible for activity under your account, subject to your legal rights.
- Tell us promptly at [SUPPORT EMAIL] if you think your account has been accessed without your permission.
3. What rolo is
rolo is a calm companion-chat app for autistic children. Your child talks to a friendly AI companion provided by our partner platform AIR. You, as the grown-up, can read every chat and receive same-day alerts when something needs your attention. This is our "watched over, never watched" promise, described in the Safeguarding & Children notice.
We may improve, change or withdraw features over time. We will give reasonable notice of significant changes.
4. Observers, and your responsibility for who you invite
rolo lets you invite other adults to help watch over your child:
- You (the owner) have full control of the account.
- Observers you invite by email are read-only: they can read the chats and receive alerts, but cannot change settings, cannot remove the child, and cannot manage billing.
You are responsible for who you invite. Inviting an observer shares your child's chats and alerts with that adult. Only invite people you trust and who have a genuine caring role in the child's life. You can remove an observer at any time. [LEGAL REVIEW NEEDED: consider shared-custody / parental-dispute scenarios and whether the other parent's consent is needed.]
5. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- use rolo for anyone other than a child you are responsible for;
- share your login so that another adult uses rolo as if they were you (invite them as an observer instead);
- attempt to break, probe, overload, reverse-engineer or misuse the service or AIR;
- use rolo unlawfully, or to harm, exploit or endanger any child.
We may suspend or end access that breaches these rules (section 11).
6. The child-safety model — and its limits
rolo is designed to help you stay close to your child's inner world. It is a supportive tool, not a safety service.
- rolo is NOT a substitute for professional care — medical, psychological, therapeutic, educational or social-care support.
- rolo is NOT an emergency service. If a child is in immediate danger, or you are worried about someone's safety, contact the emergency services (999) or the appropriate professional or helpline — do not rely on rolo.
- The AI companion can make mistakes and may say things that are wrong or unhelpful. The oversight and alert features are aids to help you, not guarantees.
Please read the Safeguarding & Children notice for how alerts and safety work in practice.
7. Subscription and billing
- rolo costs £15 per month (inc. VAT) for the whole family — all your children and all your observers are included. There is one flat plan; safety has no tiers.
- The subscription renews automatically each month until you cancel.
- You can cancel at any time from your account; cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period, and you keep access until then.
- Payments are handled by our payment provider, [PAYMENT PROVIDER].
- Refunds: [REFUNDS POLICY PLACEHOLDER — e.g. statement of the 14-day cancellation right for online subscriptions under the Consumer Contracts Regulations, and any goodwill refund policy]. [LEGAL REVIEW NEEDED: confirm the statutory cancellation/refund rights and draft the refund policy.]
- We will give reasonable notice of any change to the price.
8. Intellectual property
rolo, its name, design and content belong to us or our licensors. AIR's platform and content belong to AIR. You get a personal, limited, non-transferable right to use rolo for your family while your subscription is active. Chats and content generated for your child are handled as described in the Privacy Policy.
[LEGAL REVIEW NEEDED: confirm IP ownership of chat content and the licence terms with AIR.]
9. Disclaimers
As far as the law allows, rolo is provided "as is" and "as available". We do not promise the service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that the AI companion will always respond appropriately. Nothing in these Terms removes rights you have as a consumer that cannot legally be excluded.
10. Limitation of liability
Nothing in these Terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything that cannot be limited by law.
Subject to that, and as far as the law allows, our total liability to you is limited to [LIABILITY CAP — e.g. the fees you paid in the previous 12 months], and we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss.
[LEGAL REVIEW NEEDED: this clause must be drafted carefully to remain valid and fair under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 for a consumer service used in connection with a child. Do not publish as-is.]
11. Suspension and termination
- You can close your account at any time. Removing a child erases both the rolo record and AIR's memory of the child (see the Privacy Policy).
- We may suspend or end your access if you break these Terms, if we must for legal or safety reasons, or if we stop providing rolo. Where we can, we will give notice.
12. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms. If we make important changes we will let you know and, where required, ask you to agree again. The "effective date" shows the current version.
13. Governing law and jurisdiction
These Terms are governed by the law of England & Wales, and disputes are subject to the courts of England & Wales (this does not remove protections you have under the law of your home nation within the UK). [LEGAL REVIEW NEEDED: confirm governing law and consumer jurisdiction rules.]
